Persian Kashan
In the workshop or city rug industry the highly skilled weavers create rugs and carpets by following a design supplied by a contractor. The contractor also supplies the yarns and has numerous looms set up in a factory. The standard is very high as is the output. Each piece is perfectly symmetrical, with an even flowing design and motifs which match exactly throughout the rug. Kashan (see left) rugs are renowned for their workmanship and quality. At the start of the rug revival period towards the end of the nineteenth century all rugs were woven on home-based looms as opposed to those based in the factory. Early Kashans from this period display signs of cottage weaving with slightly uneven designs and motifs. However they were still produced to a very high quality.
