Decorative elements with a rug design are created by by using strands of different colours to produce the knots. Rugs can be knotted in several ways, and each area of production will incorporate its own individual technique. The art of weaving is often passed through the generations, especially in tribal communities. The primary materials used are always the same, including wool, silk and cotton. The highly perishable nature of such materials does not favour their preservation and explains the scarcity of solid evidence from the past. However some carpets have stood the test of time. For example the Pazyryk carpet was discovered in the late 1940s and dates back to the 5th century BC.
