The Gul Design
Ersari Gul Design
The Gul is a very distinctive motif which originates from the weavings of Turkestan. It was used as a full-field design with repeating rows of guls. The design of each gul was associated with different Turkman tribes. The rug we see to the left incorporates a fairly square, box-like motif which is typical of the Ersari tribe. The design is incorrectly referred to as ‘Bukhara’ after the name of the city in Uzbekistan. Bukhara is situated along the silk route, and is the place where these rugs were marketed and sold, so the name has stuck. Many Pakistani and Afghan rugs include the gul designs today.
