A carpet pattern can be designed and reproduced in three ways: firstly, by committing it to memory while working with someone who is familiar with the design (typical for tribal weavings) ; secondly, by copying another piece knot for knot (common in the cottage industry) ; and thirdly, by using a cartoon (usual for workshop production). A weaver in the cottage industry wishing to use a new design will often produce a small pattern carpet (vagireh – see image to left) in the way of a test sample. This would include at least one repeat of each motif. Once an order has been placed, this sample rug can then be copied to produce the piece that will be sold.
