During the rug revival period at the end of the nineteenth century the demand for hand woven rugs and carpets increased dramatically. In turn this caused a large number of rug production workshops opening to satisfy demand. Initially the factories were located in Persia but soon spread to other countries such as India, Pakistan, Turkey and Nepal. In China workshops have been producing rugs continuously for about three hundred years. With the growing demand the output increased, and still maintains a high volume export trade. The factories would produce rugs that were popular and in large numbers. Occasionally the workshops would produce a carpet to order. The commercial workshops can respond almost immediately to any change in fashion or taste.
