To begin with tribal weaving groups produced rugs for their own personal requirements. This included garments for warmth and comfort. Eventually the weavings gained popularity and items were produced for more aesthetic reasons. Local villages villages and populations began to appreciate the attractive rugs and carpets and they became fashionable. Wool carpets have been woven for many years using horizontal and vertical looms. There is much debate as to which came first. It is also considered by some that carpets have always been produced for artistic demand. The Pazyryk carpet discovered in 1947 encased in ice supports this theory. The carpet dates back to the 5th century BC and is an example of refined workmanship.
