Carpets were originally woven on horizontal looms which were easily dismantled and transported. They were initially used to provide piled garments to keep themselves warm and to use as floor coverings. The weaver’s intentions were exclusively directed towards providing something practical and beneficial for daily use. Only in the future did the aesthetic element become an interest. The woven pieces became desirable and fashionable, and were used to decorate home rather than just to provide warmth and comfort. This led to an increase in the amount of colours used and a variety in the type of designs which evolved into established decorative motifs that we still see today.
