Around 1875 there was a movement in the carpet production industry known as the revival period. During this time the production of Persian carpets grew and the demand in the west became big business. An Anglo-Swiss company founded by Ziegler and Co in Manchester also started production and are responsible for the much-loved Afghan Ziegler rug designs of today. During the middle part of the nineteenth century Persia was in economic decline. The larger well established weaving centres managed to survive this period but many of the smaller ceased production. Then suddenly, rugs woven by cottage industries, which existed with many different levels of technical abilities and styles, experienced a huge increase in demand for their goods. The demand was satisfied by massive investment and a large number of new looms started production.
