Afghan rugs are woven using wool fibres and foundation. The fringes or warps are typically a dark grey or brown colour, which is one of the main characteristics. Rugs have been woven in Afghanistan for hundreds of years. They are predominantly produced by women in nomadic tribes with designs passed down through the generations. The rugs are woven on small looms which are easy to dismantle and transport when required. The wool is often derived from the herd belonging to the tribe. The weavings can take between 12 and 24 weeks to produce. Some carpets can take over a year to weave, depending on the number of weavers working together. One of the most popular rugs that we see today is the Afghan Ziegler which complements the colour palette of the contemporary home due to its earthy tones.
