Wool and Silk Bukhara
The primary materials used to weave carpets have been the same for centuries. These include: wool, cotton and silk. Gold and silver thread has also been used for extravagant court carpets produced for shahs and emperors. The materials used have always depended on their availability in a given area of production, and the requirements of the final product. Due to the availability of wool throughout the Orient, it is the most widely used carpet-making fibre. Sheep wool is preferred, but goat hair has been used, although mainly for the side cords or selvedges. Camel hair has also been used, although it is less durable than sheep wool and more resistant to dyes.
