Bakhtiar rugs are woven by the nomadic Bakhtiari tribe inhabiting an area of central west Iran. The rugs are woven using wool derived from sheep within the tribe. In summer months the tribes move to the higher reaches of the Zagros mountains. During the winter the sheep graize on grass lower down to avoid the snow-covered slopes at higher altitudes. Roughly seventy percent of the tribes are now settled in villages and towns. They are still regarded as tribal rugs today and are woven using woollen pile, warps and wefts with a symmetrical knot. Occasionally the rugs may have a cotton foundation and fringe, in which case would be considered as village rugs. Bakhtiar rugs are also woven in the form of kilims, salt bags and saddlebags. Rugs come in all sizes, including small runners up to room-sized pieces.
