Cottage Industry Rugs
Nineteenth Century Bidjar
Cottage weaving is long established. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries many rugs were exported to Europe from western Turkey. Large numbers of these survive in churches in the Transylvanian district of Rumania. They are small and woven in a typical cottage industry style. Many of the rugs woven in the Milas district were produced in this way, and still are today. One of the main features of this style is that the designs are rustic versions of earlier more sophisticated patterns, particularly those that frequented thew Ottoman court. An interesting parallel occurred around the same time in the Caucasus, then under Persian rule, where circumstances never seem to have been suitable for the establishment of court-quality workshops similar to those elsewhere in Persia.
