Persian Hamadan
In Persia during the early nineteenth century carpet production overall had fallen. However, cottage weaving, viewed by many Persian dealers as a ‘side show’, never diminished. The demand was stimulated by foreign demands and the Persian village weavers responded enthusiastically and the output increased dramatically. Later in the nineteenth century demand had increased to such a level that western companies began to experiment with automated machinery which could replicate a handwoven carpet. Tomkinson, a British firm, achieved this in 1910 and began to produce Turish inspired rugs. This never proved very successful and they struggled to compete with Persian weavings such as Hamadan (see left), which could be produced almost as quickly and more cost effectively.
