Moths are becoming an increasingly common problem to wool and silk rugs. As you can see from the image they can cause a large amount of damage. The damage that moths can cause sometimes goes unnoticed, as with this rug they have been eating the fibres from the back of the rug. Moths tend to prefer dark, undisturbed areas to carry out their destruction. The adults will lay their eggs in these areas knowing that their offspring will have an ideally suited environment and food source, increasing their chances of surviving into adulthood. The larvae cases can survive for many months before maturing into adults, and in that time can completely ruin a rug.
Regular vacuuming both sides of the rug can reduce the damage. Creating a light and airy environment can also reduce moth activity as they tend to thrive in dark humid conditions.
