Early Piled Carpets
Pazyryk Carpet
The first piled carpets may have imitated the texture and insulating properties of animal pelts. Some carpets woven by nomads have just this quality. The oldest complete carpet was found frozen in a tomb of a nomadic chieftain at Pazyryk in southern Siberia, close to the Mongolian border. Also in the tomb, preserved in ice since the fifth century BC, were perishable items including felt, leatherwork, wood carvings, woollen textiles and Chinese silks. The Pazyryk rug is on view in the Hermitage Museum, Leningrad. It measures two metres square, quite finely knotted and of velvety texture. There is much discussion about who is responsible for the weaving. The design suggests an origin in Archaemenid, Persia, but also thought that is was made by nomads.
