Gabbeh rugs tend to be very coarsely woven using very thick deep piled wool. They can be very heavy due to the depth of the pile. The weight increases three-fold during the washing process as they can hold a huge amount of water. These rugs have geometric patterns, sometimes with an open field with just a single colour, decorated minimally with small animal or human devices. Abrash is very common throughout the field due to the different batches of wool used to weave the pieces. We have also found that moths are very fond of residing within the deep, thick woollen pile. Due to the weight of the rugs they are not moved too regularly and this lack of disturbance encourages the moths further to inhabit such rugs. Many times the moths can be found underneath, consuming the rugs from the back, where it can go unnoticed. It is a good idea to turn the rugs upside down and vacuum the back every so often. This will help to remove dry soil from the rug and also remove any moth larvae cases, thereby minimising the damage.
