It is not possible for an agent to oversee and supervise many looms and maintain high standards. In this respect the cottage industry differs drastically from workshop production where quality control is a critical factor in successful marketing. The cottage industry is very responsive to the demands of the marketplace. When the demand is high more and more looms are constructed and the weavers work long hours to boost production. Cottage weavers are always searching for new ideas. Successful patterns are learned, new ones are tested and old designs are copied. Occasionally sample carpets were made to give an example of border types and field designs. With the help of such a sample, an order was more likely to be placed.
