Today, any discussion of the earliest Persian carpets must speak in terms of rarity due to the precious nature of such pieces. It is for this reason that all the surviving carpets from the Safavid ear are now held in great collections. It is difficult to classify them according to production centre with any confidence as identical models were employed and circulated among many workshops. Similar working techniques were used in the workshops, results in characteristics of the finished carpets being the same, including the large sizes and the use of precious metal and silk threads. The leading workshops during the Safavid period were at Tabriz, Kashan, Kerman, Herat, Isfahan and Joshaghan, but the differences between the carpets were superficial.
