India has no longstanding indigenous tradition of hand-knotted pile carpets and rugs compared to other eastern areas. Court carpets were produced in India during the second half of the sixteenth century, however the weavers were brought in from Persia. This resulted in an initial Persian design influence. During the seventeenth century a distinctive Mughal style emerged. A few years later the rug producing workshops in India reached the pinnacle of technical and artistic perfection. The best carpets have a silk foundation with a woollen pile. Rugs from this period are decorated with flowering plants and lattice designs. The pile was sourced from the fleece of Tibetan mountain goats which had the dying and weaving properties of wool, but the visual lustre of silk.
