Persian Nain rugs are woven in a city of the same name which is located near to Isfahan. It is a fairly new weaving centre, with production starting early in the twentieth century. The rugs are heavily influenced by the Isfahan design. Usually woven with wool pile and a cotton foundation. Silk is sometimes used to highlight the outline of floral designs. Nain rugs are fairly easy to recognise due to the very distinctive blues used throughout the design. They are very tightly woven and thought of as one of the best quality workmanship rugs in Iran. The rugs are generally woven at about 300-500 knots per square inch, and sometimes higher. The pile is tight and cut short. The silk highlights tend to dull down over time as they attract soiling. Professional rug cleaning can dramatically improve the appearance of the fibres, especially the silk, bringing the original shine and lustre back.
As with all hand knotted and machine made rugs, cleaning should never be attempted in the home using detergent based solutions which could compromise the dyes. Professional cleaning would be recommended to prolong the life and maintain the appearance of these wonderful pieces of floor art.
