The Turkmen of what is now Turkmenistan have not done so well. The defeat of the Russian army by the Tekke tribe brought a crushing reprisal at the battle of Gok Tepe in 1881, the culmination of several decades of action against the Turkmen, from which the Tekke never recovered as an independent nomadic group. Large numbers fled to Afghanistan and Persia changing from pastoralists into cotton farmers.
