Ardebil Carpet
The stunning Ardebil carpet is one of the great masterpieces in carpet weaving from both the visual and technical perspectives. It measures approximately 34 feet x 17 feet and has a silk foundation with a wool pile. It is asymmetrically knotted. According to some scholars, the carpet was donated by ‘Maksud of Kashan’ to the mosque of the Persian city of Ardebil. There is no actual proof of this, but this is where the name was derived. The rug was woven in 1539 – 1540. The rug is thought to have been woven in either Tabriz or Kashan. The carpet came to the UK towards the end of the nineteenth century, and now resides in the Victoria and Albert museum. It is protected by a glass box to enable viewing and the lights are only turned on for a brief period every 30 minutes to protect the dyes.
