The rulers of the Islamic courts of the sixteenth and seventeenth century were well known for employing designers of the highest quality. Their artwork was incorporated in carpets and rugs. The image on the left shows a small carpet woven during the rule of Shah Tahmasp during the sixteenth century. The workshop was thought to have been in Kashan. This rug was likely to have been designed by one of the most talented artists of the time. At the time these pieces of art were ground-breaking and set new trends and fashions. These court carpet designs have inspired weavers for generations since. The artists also produced work which also appeared on ceramics and paintings were named according to the dynasty under which they were produced.
