For three decades the Russian authorities tried to convert the Kazakh nomads to the ways of regular permanent housing and agriculture. In spite of these pressures the Kazakh way of life still survives. The huge loss of livestock and lack of rainfall has has affected the steppe land, causing those in authority to adopt a more flexible attitude towards nomadism. Camel breeding programmes have now been launched, and the nomadic family has been restyled as a ‘brigade’. As an acknowledgement of the validity of the nomadic life, the red tents housing adult educational activities, have joined the nomadic camps.
