During the Safavid dynasty the rug production process was divided into two separate phases – the design and the actual weaving. Court miniaturists were commissioned to create the designs which, after conversion into cartoons, were used as models for weavers employed in the imperial workshops. This distinction between the role of the creative artist and the working craftsman had never been applied to the production of carpets and rugs. Until then it had always been tied to patterns passed on through memory for generations or created spontaneously on the loom. This created the greatest divergence between town and court rug production.
