Persian Quchan
Quchan is a city based in the northern Khurasan area, northwest of Mashad in Iran. Quchan rugs are often referred to as Quchan Kurd rugs due to the large population of kuridish inhabitants in the city and surrounding areas. These Kurdish descendants were deported from Kurdistan in the seventeenth bringing their traditional rug weaving influences with them. The rugs are woven using locally produced wool which is finer than the Kurdish rugs woven in the west. Symmetrical knots are used with typical Kurdish designs. Flatwoven rugs such as kilims and soumaks are very commonplace. Quchan design is also influenced heavily by the neighbouring Turkman and Beluchi tribes. Quchan rugs are generally coarsley woven in a variety of sizes usually from 6’x 4′ to room-sized pieces.
