Persian cottage industry-produced rugs and carpets are extremely well known the world over. Bijar carpets (see left) famous for this typical design and more so for their durability. The rugs are finely woven and are very thick and chunky and last for many years. This has led to the nickname ‘Iron Rugs of Persia’. Senneh is another famous cottage weaving centre, known for their fine workmanship and pastel colours. Settled Baluchis in Khorasan produce rugs with dark colours soft wool at a reasonable price. Technical ability and weaving standards have remained high to this day, to such an extent that small cottage-weaving setups managed to produce extremely large carpets. Typically, these carpets were never formally designed but followed popular style present throughout Persia.
