The nomadic life may have romantic appeal for the city-dwellers but it clearly also has a very real attraction for its long-standing adherents who continue to cling to it with extraordinary tenacity in the face of endless suppression. Historically the more independent have always been seen by central government as a potential threat and have tended to suffer as a consequence. In Persia during the first half of the eighteenth century Nadir Shah forcibly relocated several tribes to the borders of his territory to act as buffers against potential invaders. The last hundred years have been a difficult time for the nomadic tribes. Some survive intact, while others cling tenaciously to their old way of life. However, during this period some have suffered at the hands of superior forces and simply disappeared.
