Modern Carpets
Modern carpet history really began in the nineteenth century, but to understand the pattern of production in each of the carpet producing countries it is necessary to know something of the history and composition of their peoples. Turkish carpets are better understood if we remember that this formerly Greek-speaking country became, in the course of four and a half centuries beginning around AD 1000, increasingly dominated by the westward movement of Turkish-speaking people who were originally steppe nomads of Turkmen origin. Pockets of Greek speakers continued to inhabit western Turkey until the first quarter of the twentieth century, when as a result of war, there was a mass migration to Crete. Some may still remain in eastern Turkey. The nomad Turks migrated throughout the country to find suitable pasture.
