Afghan Ziegler Rug
Ziegler rugs represent an interesting fusion of European and Middle Eastern carpet traditions. In 1883 the Swiss company Ziegler & Co., based in Manchester began commissioning carpets in Persia (modern-day Iran) specifically designed for Western markets.
The original Ziegler designs modified traditional Persian patterns to suit Victorian tastes, featuring softer colours and larger, more open patterns compared to traditional Persian rugs. These designs were revolutionary because they were among the first Oriental rugs specifically created for Western consumers.
Afghan Ziegler rugs are a more recent development, emerging after the Soviet-Afghan War when many Afghan weavers began producing their own interpretation of these designs. They are typically:
- Made with hand-spun Afghan wool, known for its high lanolin content
- Woven using natural dyes
- Characterized by:
- Larger, more spacious patterns
- Softer, more muted color palettes
- Modified traditional Persian floral motifs
- A combination of geometric and curvilinear designs
The Afghan versions often feature:
- A wool pile on a cotton foundation
- Excellent durability due to the quality of Afghan wool
- Colours like soft terracotta, pale blue, cream, and sage green
These rugs continue to be popular in contemporary interior design because their subdued patterns and colours work well with modern décor while maintaining traditional craftsmanship.
