Due to the lack of documentary evidence, the basic questions of where and why the knotted carpet was born have never been fully answered. However, two theories concerning the origins of the knotted carpet have been put forward. The first theory states that the knotted rug came into being during an early period and was created by nomadic tribes seeking a way to protect themselves from direct contact with the ground. The second theory assumes that carpets and rugs were woven by a more evolved population to satisfy an aesthetic requirement, mainly to decorate the walls and floors of their settled dwellings.
