Development of the asymmetrically designed floral carpets and rugs exploded during the 16th century.  Carpets began to fill with highly complicated floral and figurative designs, sometimes of a naturalistic character.  Layouts were varied, with many now using the medallion design.  This has now become one of the most recognisable styles of modern carpet design.  Anatolian carpets preferred the geometric symmetrical knotting type, while Persia made the floral, asymmetrical knot style its own.  The first Indian carpets emerged during the 16th century due to the wishes of the Mogul emperor.   These carpets were distinguished floral designs inspired by the west.
