Antique carpets are generally thought to be of over one hundred years old. But the precise classification considers anything woven prior to the introduction of synthetic dyes to be antique. Therefore this would be rugs manufactured before 1860. The rugs woven around the 1920s, which we consider to be antique, are more commonly referred to as ‘modern’. Carpets woven during this time show a degree of conformity to market demands as stylistic trends determine what sells and what doesn’t. Carpets woven prior to 1800 are so rare that they can only be found in museums or large private collections. Most ‘antique’ carpets on the market today tend to be from the late 19th or early 20th century.
