Central Asia has been invaded many times during its history. The most famous being by the Mongols led by Chingis Khan in the twelfth century. Less well kown were the earlier movements by the Turkmen tribes beginning in the tenth century. These two groups combined and had a major influence over the art and culture of the Middle East. The reason for these incursions is known fully understood, but it is commonly thought that war or competition for resources had a major impact. During these unsettled periods powerful leaders came to the fore and gathered large tribal military units. The nomads had a self-sufficient lifestyle, and with high-powered bows and armies on horseback, had an overwhelming advantage. This is one of the main reasons we see tribal influences within Persian rugs today.
