To the untrained eye hand tufted Chinese rugs can, at first glance, resemble the far superior hand woven Chinese rugs. However on closer inspection it is noticeable that the quality and feel is completely different. An easy way to tell is by looking at the back and you’ll see a cloth covered back if the rug is hand-tufted. If the rug is woven then you’ll be able to see the same pattern on the back that appears on the front. You’ll also be able to see the individual knots. With the hand tufted version the fringe is not part of the rug but it is applied afterwards. The back of the rug is also covered with latex to hold the piece together and the backing is applied to cover the latex. This can make washing fairly tricky as it is best to keep the moisture to a minimum, so as not to cause damage, or weaken the latex.
As with all hand knotted and machine made rugs, cleaning should never be attempted in the home using detergent based solutions which could compromise the dyes. Professional cleaning would be recommended to prolong the life and maintain the appearance of these wonderful pieces of floor art.
