One of the most common designs in Oriental carpets is known as the ‘cloudband’. Usually found on the perimeter of the rug featured within borders. Clouds are also symbolized by the ‘cloud collar’ motif. This is a design which originated in Chinese rugs. It is composed of a circle with four or more elements shaped like multifoil arrows that create a clover. The cloud motif represents the gate of heaven. Just as clouds protect the sun, the cloudband design when used in the borders depicts a protective barrier to the central field of the rug. The design has been used in Persian and Turkish carpets since the 16th century. The clover motif was mainly used in Caucasian rugs, but even more so in the eastern Turkoman carpets
