Towards the end of the 16th century the curvilinear, floral designs became more commonplace throughout Persia. During the next few centuries the styles in this region did not change drastically. In Anatolia and India the classical geometric designs continued to be woven. The productions of the Caucasus and Turkestan were oblivious to the new floral style and continued to be faithful to their own geometric creations. China, without an ancient carpet tradition, followed its own particular styles, characterised by geometric and floral designs. In Europe, carpets had been made since the 12th century and to these were added the great French carpets of Aubusson and Savonnerie during the 17th century and English carpets during the 18th.
