Persian Hamadan Dyes
For blue dyes nothing is better than indigo. The name comes from the ancient Greek word for Indian. For thousands of years the indigo plant, which requires a sub-tropical climate, has been cultivated in India. The dyestuff extracted from the plants was exported in dark blue cakes which found their way through trade into every corner of the ancient world. Another source of blue dye was Dyer’s woad, native to eastern Europe and known in pre-Roman Britain. The dyestuff obtained from both plants is identical. However, the dye derived from the indigo plant contains thirty time more indigo than that from woad. The availability of synthetic indigo, which is identical to the plant extract, has virtually put an end to the cultivation of the indigo plant in India.
