Yellow dyes are found in great variety of plants. Most fade quickly on exposure to light. One of the few plants known to have been used by dyers in former times, weld is one of the best. With alum mordant it gives an extremely light-fast yellow. To obtain black, wool is mordanted with iron and dyed with oak galls or acorn cups which contain tannins. When the dyer uses these yellow dyes along with madder, indigo, alum and iron sulphate, he is equipped to produce the typical village and tribal palette of between six and thirteen colours which are; two blues (occasionally three), one red (occasionally two), apricot (weak madder), purple, orange (sometimes), yellow, green, black and undyed white. To obtain green the wool is dyed with indigo plus yellow, and for orange with madder plus yellow.
