Persian Rug Dying
The dying process is traditionally performed by men and is a delicate process. Natural dyes were exclusively used until 1860-1870, after which new synthetic dyes began to appear. The artificial dyes were less expensive to source, easier to use, and therefore eventually replaced natural dyes. Natural dying was an art form carried out by specialists. The secret formulas were composed of naturally derived products. Saffron, crocus or vine leaves produced yellow, cochineal (dried bodies of female cochineal insects), cherry juice or madder produced red, indigo for blue, and nutshells, tobacco or tea produced black or brown dyes. Having obtained primary colours, complementary colours could be produced by combining two or more colours.
